In continuation of the series on the applications of Robotic Process Automation (RPA), here are a few ways RPA can benefit legal firms.

Gathering Data

It’s a well known fact that attorneys do a lot of time consuming research. Robotic process automation (RPA) bots can be implemented to do things like gather data from public records and collect data on past cases that are similar to what they are working on. Once a bot knows what to search for, it can run this search and compile the data in minutes. Think of how much more time an attorney can spend reviewing the data rather than spending hours compiling it all themselves? Keywords are an important factor when it comes to research in the legal field. Instead of having attorneys search for documents with these keywords, have a bot compile everything for you!

Document Handling

Whether it’s email or fax, sorting through incoming documents is a tedious task. Not only is it time consuming, it also needs to be done multiple times throughout the day to make sure nothing is missed. RPA can be implemented to extract documents from emails and faxes and classify them according to your preferences. This can be done automatically and reminders can be enabled to let an employee know that something has arrived. Similar to the healthcare industry, billing can be a completely automated task. Sending out and receiving claims can run 24/7 without human interference. It’s only natural for us to make errors, yet these errors can cause long delays and profit loss. By using RPA to generate contracts and forms, you can reduce your error rate significantly and cut back on delays. Compliance is another big part of the legal field and automation can be used to search for data that may potentially be a risk for a law firm and alert the proper personnel.

Form Drafting

The legal field is filled with paperwork and data. Simple things like reminder messages can be sent using RPA, as well as more complex tasks like drafting agreements and forms. By implementing a system that uses AI along with RPA, the system can learn by watching what an employee does and then repeat it. This type of automation is great for tasks that have proven processes. Currently, many firms are paying attorneys and paralegals to do these repetitive tasks which could easily be automated. This allows for those people to focus on higher level tasks. As in every industry, time is money and in this day and age, companies are finding more and more ways to streamline their processes and save loads of time.

Conclusion

We have come to a point in time where RPA is the here and now. It can seem like a daunting task to implement these types of bots and systems, but starting slowly gives you the chance to see how RPA can help your firm and then increase the automation as you become more confident. It is a race to see which firms will jump in and implement automation and which firms will fall behind, stuck in their old, time consuming ways of doing things.
